Master What Matters
Master What Matters
When you read the words “master what matters”, what thoughts pop into your mind? Does it make you pause and think about what matters to you? If you were to make a list, what items would you include? Would you list the right answers, the answers all good Christians should list, or would you be honest? Would you look within and see what you make important that simply isn’t? Would you list success, approval, feelings, retirement plan, control, security, understanding, acknowledgement, your needs, your selfish desires, your daughter’s grades and your son’s batting average? When did we become so confused about what matters?
As you read the words “master what matters”, where do you place the punctuation? Do you read it “Master What Matters!”? Do you make it a command? Does it make you think of all the things you need to do - what you need to accomplish? Does it create guilt and shame and make you wish you could be proud of what you have mastered? Does it shine the spot light on you and cause you to start listing things you are doing right? Do you find yourself wanting credit? When did we become so confused about what matters?
What if we all took these three simple words and simply prayed, “Master, what matters?”. What if we asked the Creator of the Universe, “What matters?” What if we asked the Sacrificial Lamb who hung on a cross and died so that we could have life and have it more abundantly, “What matters?” What if we cried out to the Holy Spirit who indwells us and pleaded for Him to teach us, “What matters?” Our lists would radically change. When did we become so confused about what matters?
It matters where we start...
On our knees is a great starting point, acknowledging our sin, surrendering our pride, our needs, our all to our Heavenly Father, inviting Jesus to be the center of our life, and yielding control to the Holy Spirit. Even if we have done this before, today is a good day to recalibrate and get re-centered.
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” John 14:6
What matters to us, matters…
We all make lists – some on paper – some in our mind. What is at the top of your list, matters. What fills your heart, matters. What drives everything you do, matters.
“Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it. ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”
It matters what we do…
Having a relationship with Jesus is truly what matters most. It is everything! He is everything we have ever wanted and everything we will ever need. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” When we do that – seek Him first – our Master reveals what matters, what truly matters, what matters most.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
A Note from Pam:
Thank you for taking time to read this post. Can we travel this journey together? Let's hold hands and pray, "Master, what matters?" Let's learn to let go of all the things that simply do not matter and cling to what matters most - Jesus. Let's get to know Him more and more and make Him the center of it all! When we surrender - we experience freedom!
