What to Do When You Don't Know What to Do

What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Do

We have so many questions and struggle to find as many answers. We want to do the right thing, but what is the right thing? How do we determine what to do when we simply don’t know what to do?

We phone a friend, type our question into Google, and call our Mama. We are so foolish. Our answers can only be found in the word or God.

In the book of Proverbs, we find wisdom (obeying God) is set in contrast to folly (turning away from the Lord or doing life “my” way instead of His way). We want to be on the side of wisdom, right? But as we study, we cannot deny that we let our own limited amount of wisdom come into play. What we forget is that our wisdom is folly. We are only wise when are walking in obedience to the Lord.

We have all heard the scripture in Proverbs 16:9 that says, “A person’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps.” We miss the part where the importance of dependence on God contrasts with looking to our own understanding. Our fears, our opinions and our understanding is not what should determine our next step. We read that God knows the reflections of our heart and is not deceived even when we deceive ourselves.

We are to be honest, righteous and ask for wisdom that comes from the Lord. We are to be humble and avoid evil (any disobedience - even when okay by the world's standards). The one who trusts in the Lord will be happy.

Then… in verses 21-33… there is instruction we often fail to apply. Here we learn about the importance of the words from a woman. Our words are to be pleasant and life-giving, sweet, and healing. The scriptures about those who slander, speak words of pain, conflict and discord are at the very least - harsh. We would never do that, right? Forgive us, Lord.

Let’s follow the path of the wise, those who obey God. Let’s quiet our tongues, purify our hearts and yield our way to His way.

“Lord, I surrender my way, my thoughts, my plans to You. Teach me Your way (Psalm 86:11). Show me Your purpose (Proverbs 19:21). I need Your wisdom, Your strength, and Your direction. More than anything, I want what You want for me. I trust Your plan and will walk with You as you reveal my steps.”
