His Faithfulness is Greater than My Fear
His Faithfulness is Greater than My Fear
(part 4 in a 5 part He > i series – video below)
His Faithfulness > My Fear
What do you fear? For some, fear is overwhelming and even consuming at times. For others, we are not cognizant of our fears, yet they still hold us back. Not all fear is bad. There is the fear of the Lord, which is our awe and respect for Him. The Bible tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the fountain of life. That is different than the spirit of fear. So today, let’s look at what God tells us about this spirit of fear…
Did you know that the Bible says, “Fear not” 365 times? Isn’t that ironic? Actually, there is nothing ironic about it. God knew fear would be a struggle for us and He gave us a scripture for each day of the year.
We fear so many things - from public speaking… to loss of love… to death. We worry about things both big and small. We become anxious and let our nerves get the best of us. Have we forgotten His faithfulness is greater than our fear?
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
As we study God’s word, we learn that God never changes, never lies, has never failed and always does what He promises to do. We can trust that He is sovereign, He is holy, He is good and He is faithful.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23
“And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purposes.” Romans 8:28
So, if His faithfulness is greater than our fear, why do we struggle with worry, nerves and anxiety? In 2 Timothy 1:7 we read, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” So, then where does the spirit of fear come from? If it is not from above, it must be from our adversary, Satan.
Could it be that when we are filled with fear, we are not filled with faith? Can fear and faith co-exist? What is it that causes us to fear? Do we not believe that God is in control? Do we doubt His goodness? Do we trust Him? Do we believe what we say we believe? Or… do we struggle with unbelief? Pause for just a second and think through that. Maybe it is time for us to be like the man in Mark 9 who brought his child to Jesus to be healed. Jesus told him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” The father replied, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”
Growing in our faith is the answer. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” The more time we spend getting to know God, our faith grows stronger and we become more confident in it - drowning out worry and fear. Spending time in prayer and worship gets us through even the darkest of nights – just ask David. (Psalm 23, 27, 34, 121 )
God is so good; even when we are faithless, He remains faithful. (2 Timothy 2:13) But as we journey through hard seasons and walk down treacherous paths, may we grow a fearless faith. A faith so rooted in God that we can proclaim, His faithfulness is greater than my fear!
