How Can we Glorify God in our Body
How can we Glorify God in our body?
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. I Corinthians 6:19-20
Have you ever stopped to think about whether or not you are glorifying God in your body? It’s a lot to ponder for sure. Recently, we have been talking about it in our Inner Circle at Engage for More and it has given us a lot to think about.
Have we bought into the world’s ideas that our bodies are for our pleasure? We worry a lot about our appearance, enjoying selfcare, and seeking our own comfort. But… does any of that glorify the Lord? Actually, our thoughts about our body can lead us to feel pride or shame. Neither pride nor shame honor God.
What if we began to focus on 10 ways we can glorify God in our body?
1. Praise Him with our mouth. Psalm 34:1-3 says, I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.” We can exchange our complaining with praises for the King, remembering who He is and all that He has done.
2. Seek to do that which honors God in our physical health. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” We should make wise choices for ourselves and be an encouragement to others to do the same.
3. Work as if working for the Lord. Have you read the scriptures about the sluggard? We are not to be lazy or become accustomed to idleness. Matter of fact, as believers we should be hard workers – because God tells us “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” Colossians 3:23
4. We honor God when we value His word. We are to read God’s word, meditate on it, and walk in obedience to it. We are to store it in our heart. It is “like a light unto our path” leading us to live a life that glorifies God. Psalm 119:11 says, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” Jesus quoted God’s word 3 times when He faced the temptations of Satan. It is powerful.
5. Exercise faith. Do we live as if we believe what we say we believe? If we have faith – why are we living in fear, overwhelmed and anxious? Our lack of faith prevents us from seeing past our circumstances. Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “without faith it is impossible to please God”. In the scriptures immediately following this one we read about the heroes of faith – Noah, Abraham, Sarah. They believed God, obeyed God and trusted God. Exercising faith honors God.
6. Do what is best for others. We are self-centered people, striving to be seen, heard and applauded. What if we applied Philippians 2:3, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” Pride should not be our motivation, instead everything should be done in the power of the Holy Spirit. We should take an honest evaluation of our own nature. This evaluation should lead us to glorify God. He is pleased when we are honest, repent, do all things in His strength – experiencing true humility. This enables us to hold others above ourselves, to value people over our possessions and our plans.
7. Grow in the fruits of the Spirit. As we abide in Christ, the fruits of the Spirit become evident in our life. Galatians 5:22 tells us, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” When we grow in the fruits of the Spirit, God is pleased.
8. Be generous. We honor God when we give of our time, our gifts and our money to help others. 2 Corinthians 9:11 tells us, “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” And in Acts 20:35 we read that Jesus “himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’.” And is Proverbs 3:9 we read, “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.”
9. Keep our bodies sexually pure. This is contrary to the world and what it finds acceptable. Many of have shame because we have messed this one up long ago. But, there is forgiveness for us. If you find yourself carrying shame from sexual sin of your past or maybe you are participating in it in this current season of your life, you can be free from it. Confess it to God and ask for His forgiveness. Then leave it in your past. We honor God by making the choice to remain sexually pure and only participating in marital sex.
10.Be faithful when persecuted. This used to seem like a foreign concept to me, but no more. We are living in a society that is growing dark. Walking in obedience to God’s word may cause those who are not walking in obedience to judge you and criticize you. When you are doing what is right, it may cause those who are not to lash out at you. The Bible has a lot to say about this very topic. Know that God sees you and is faithful. Honor Him by staying faithful to Him.
· Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse them. Romans 12:14
· Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. Matthew 5:44
· Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:10
· Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted
