Leaders Use the Pronoun WE

It is so easy to focus on me, do what I think is best, and only worry about my future, my decisions, and my next steps.

It is so easy to see my way as the best way and other’s idea as subpar.

It is so easy to build my dream and not even consider the dream of others.

The only problem is I cannot find the scripture that states, put yourself first – ahead of those you are called to lead. I have searched and searched, and it doesn’t seem to be anywhere in God’s word.

Instead, there are these scriptures…

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4

Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:36-40

So, if leaders use the pronoun, WE, what should our thoughts, beliefs, and actions become?

Thought: It is hard to lead others when we have nothing in common.

Belief: Everyone has worth and value, which was instilled in us by our Creator. (Gen. 1:27)

Action: Stop talking about me and start talking about what “we” are doing, who we are as a team, and where we are headed.

Thought: It is challenging to work alongside difficult people.

Belief: We all stumble (James 3:2); we are all difficult in some way. (It’s true!)

Action: Stop thinking “if it is to be, it’s up to me” and start seeing the completeness of we. When we all come together to use our gifts and talents, we can get more accomplished. (Remember… on body, many parts. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

Thought: I need to look out for myself and do what is best for me.

Belief: As a believer, God is my CEO. My job is to be obedient to His word and glorify Him in my thoughts and actions. He is in control.

Action: Stop being me-motivated / driven and start being empowered by the Holy Spirit to grow a team of individuals who trust you, know your heart, and will follow you anywhere.

As believers, we are leaders. We cannot afford to miss the purpose God has for us being in a position of leadership. Lives are depending on us to lead like Jesus. And… when we do, we just might lead the lost to salvation, the broken to restoration, and the immature to sanctification.

Stop saying, “me” and start saying, “we”. What difference might that make in your home, your workplace, and in your community. Together, we can make a mighty impact for the Kingdom.

Let’s do it!

I am praying for you as you lead out today!

Pam
