It Matters - Become a Christ-Centered Leader

How often do you think about being a Christ-centered leader? What does it really mean? And does it even matter?

Look around you and what you might soon discover is that there is a lot of confusion in our world. Instead of love - there is hate. Instead of truth - there is opinion. And just like the Bible says, we are living in a time where right seems wrong and wrong seems right.

Even amongst Believers there is confusion. We, too, can value our opinions instead of the truth of God’s word. We declare we are certain about things, when God is calling us into uncertainty with Him. We say we are a follower of Christ, but we have no interest is leading others or impacting lives because it is outside our comfort zone and time constraints. So, instead of loving and leading, we bark judgement from our high horse (ouch!) and think we have all the answers instead of continually surrendering to The Answer - Jesus - and following the example He set for us to follow.

Yikes!

Today, can I tell you Christ-centered leadership is not about your comfort zone or personality type or what your title is at work. You know what it is about?

  • Our love for God

  • Our obedience to His word

  • Our desire to follow Him

As we follow the example that Jesus set for us to follow, we should be setting an example for others to follow.

And let’s all note - Jesus was a strong leader, therefore - we should be as well.

The first step to become a Christ-centered leader is to center our life on Christ. It sounds simple, but it’s not. It is easy to be the Lord of our own life. It is easy to practice religion. It is easy to cower instead of standing firm.

Today is a good day to get re-centered.

So, what does it look like to have Christ-centered leadership?

Here are 6 essential elements…

  1. Love and Compassion - God commands us to love Him and love people. This requires that we show compassion to people, care for others, and show up for them. We are to be the hands and feet of Jesus. If we want them to know God loves them - we should love them. If we want them to know He is faithful - we should be a faithful friend. If we want them to know He is with them - we should show up to be with them. Love is an action word. It is a decision we make. No one has to prove anything to us. We love.

  2. Service over status - Our priority is to serve others. Our leadership is simply an act of service to God and to the people He has placed in our lives. This requires that we take the focus off ourselves and place it onto those around us. How can we serve them well? Service includes telling them the truth and pointing others to Jesus.

  3. Integrity - leading with honesty and maintaining high ethical standards that honor God. It becomes complicated when we people please and exaggerate the truth. It is simple when we are honest and transparent - truly being who we say we are. People must be able to trust us in order to follow us.

  4. Stewardship and Vision - steward your leadership in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, applying Biblical principles. We must lead ourselves well so that we can lead others well. This requires an eternal vision. Our life is about more than the here and now - it is about eternity. We need to see our life, our circumstances, and the hard seasons from a higher vantage point and recognize the opportunity to impact the Kingdom. We are not to seek credit, but bring honor and glory to the Lord.

  5. Empowering Others - seeking to mentor and teach and lead others. Helping them to be strong. Helping them to be courageous. Inspiring them to speak up. Setting an example of honesty and integrity for them to follow. We are to take time to engage in conversation so we can encourage. And we are to live in a way that inspires and empowers others.

  6. Community - be in community with others. It is Biblical. First, be a part of a Bible preaching, Bible teaching church. (Beware - pay attention - we don’t need feel good religion. We need the truth of God’s word.) Get involved and find community there. Get to know people. Then have community with like minded believers. People who support you, encourage you and inspire you - and where you can offer the same. This is vital for the edification of the church (not the building - but the family of God).

It is not about your title, your comfort zone, your personality or you at all. It is about your surrender to become who God is calling you to become so you can do what He is calling you to do. You are to be obedient to Him. Choose to be faithful in the little. Start small and let God grow you and stretch you little by little.

Why does this matter?

Look around you. People you know and love do not know Jesus. People you sit next to in church are practicing religion, talking the talk, and do not have a relationship with their Savior. People do not know what you know. There is no one else to tell them - it has to be you.

When you submit and become a Christ-centered leader, it will change you. It is a part of the transformation that God talks about in Romans 12:2. It isn’t enough to just know the Word, we have to apply it, and obey it. When we do - everything changes.

But be careful. This call to lead - is not an invitation to lead like the world. It is an invitation to lead like Jesus. Make no mistake - He wasn’t guided by His comfort zone. He wasn’t a weak leader. He was a courageous and strong leader - confronting evil, overturning injustice, and calling out religious hypocrisy.

We never want to mis-lead. We want to lead well.

You do that by

  1. submitting to the authority of Jesus

  2. implementing the 6 elements above

  3. staying strong and courageous in the Lord

Friend, there are people waiting on you to rise up and lead them to Jesus.

Not leading is saying those people do not matter.

Rising up to lead well says those people matter to me.

What will you do?

I am praying for you.
