Stupid Rich

There has been a commercial on TV the past couple of weeks featuring people who are stupid rich. There is one that makes me chuckle every time I see it. Do you know which one I am talking about? There is a mother and her grown daughter at an auction. They are discussing a product that can supposedly save them money. The daughter says, “We don’t need to save money, do we Momma?” The family is obviously wealthy – but it appears they have more money than they have sense. As the auctioneer is calling for bidders – they keep raising their paddles. The daughters says, “Like Daddy always says, ‘Money doesn’t spend itself’, right Momma?” About that time the mom notices her toned arm muscle and says, “Look at that.” The mother and daughter both lift their bidding paddles up and down – raising the auction price higher and higher – as they admire their arms and compare their muscles. You cannot help but giggle. They truly are stupid rich. (Click here to watch the commercial… https://youtu.be/qMnHHyjL_eQ)

So the past few days I have been thinking about that. Stupid rich…what does that mean to you? It is someone who has so much wealth they just spend money recklessly. They never give it a second thought. They just squander it away…wasting it. As I was thinking about this, I thought of this scripture…

“The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.” Proverbs 10:22

We are stupid rich! We are!!! The blessing of the Lord has made us rich, stupid rich! We are blessed – yet we focus on anything and everything that is not going our way. The Bible tells us that every good and perfect gift comes from above. Yet, we walk past our blessings all the time and never notice. We take so much for granted. Stop where you are right now and look around you. See the blessings? Count them! They are everywhere. There are far too many to number. We are rich!!! We are richly blessed.

God rains down His love on us and we squander it away. We do not even think about it. This morning have you given any thought to the fact that God loves you so much? “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32) His love for us is unconditional and will never go away. It is constant. It is complete. It is sweet, oh so sweet. Bask in His love for you! God sees you as good enough, a masterpiece, His beloved, His precious child.

Then there is His grace…His amazing grace. God has poured His grace out on us. He has not just given us a little bit of grace. He has poured His grace out. He does not parent like us. We get frustrated and angry and say, that’s it! I have told you and told you not to do this. But God, He just keeps pouring out grace, loving us and waiting for us to love Him with all of our heart, all of our soul and all of our mind. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus said that this is the greatest commandment. We are to love God with all of our being. How are we doing with that?

We are so stupid rich that we do not even realize how blessed we are. Why would we ever grumble or complain about anything? Our blessings far outweigh our difficulties. Why worry? God has promised to supply all our needs. (Philippians 4:19) All we have to do is trust. When we are tired and weary, He says “Come to me…and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) He will hold us and carry us when things are hard. He’s got us. We are His and He is ours.

So, God loves us, rains His grace down, gives us gifts, meets our needs and supplies our joy. Joy? Because we are stupid rich are we missing out on joy? Nehemiah 8:10 tells us that the “joy of the Lord is our strength”. In my Nelson study Bible it explains, “The joy of the Lord is the joy that springs up in our hearts because of our relationship to the Lord. It is a God-given gladness found when we are in communion with God. When our goal is to know more about the Lord, the by-product is His joy. “ Because He loves us, rains grace down on us, provides every good and perfect gift, meets our needs, and has secured our eternity – we can experience JOY. If we do not have anything else but Him – we are rich – crazy, over the top – RICH! That is all we need to know to have JOY!!!! Dance! Shout! Bow before Him! Praise Him! We are rich and we are full of joy!

Oh God, may we never ever be stupid rich again. May we be very aware of our great wealth! May we acknowledge our great blessings! May your praise be ever on our lips! We are rich – not because of us and what we have done – but because of You and all You have provided for us.

Psalm 34:1- 4 says,

“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord; the humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.”
