4 Steps to Overcome the Overwhelm, Part 4

4 Steps to Overcome Overwhelm, Part 4

Don’t live in the overwhelm when you can live in the overflow.

For the past few weeks, we have been talking about overwhelm. We are hearing so much about it these days. We are even claiming it as ours. Why are we doing that? Jesus did not tell us that He came so we could be overwhelmed. No, He said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

When we feel the overwhelm rising up inside of us, what if we stopped and chose to intentionally…

1.     Remember who we are. (Ephesians 2:1-10)

For those of us who have surrendered our life to Christ, He has made us alive in Him. WE are children of God. We have been made new. We are already seated in the heavenly places and His promises are ours. We are His workmanship, His masterpiece, and He has a plan for us. And if all of that is not enough – we have an inheritance and can partake of His presence, His provision and His promises.

2.     Remember what He has done. (Ephesians 2:11-13)

God loved us so much He sent His son, so that if you believe in Him, you could be reconciled to God and have the hope of eternity with Him. Jesus left His throne, lived a perfect life in this fallen world and gave His life for us. Now, it’s our turn to give our life as a living sacrifice back to Him.

3.     Remember, we know peace. (Ephesians 2:14-18)

If we know Jesus, we know peace. But sometimes, we forget what we know. We are to let the peace of God rule in our hearts. How? By fixing our eyes on Him and trusting Him with every situation and in every circumstance.

And today, let’s add to the list…

4.     Remember, you are His dwelling place. (Ephesians 2:19-22)

Jesus is our Chief Cornerstone and we are being fitted together into a holy temple in the Lord. We, as believers, are joined together in one family as “the church” and are a holy dwelling place for God’s presence.

How can we be overwhelmed, when we are filled with His presence?

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” (John 14:23)

Could our overwhelm stem from the fact that we are merely visiting with Jesus instead of living with Him?

Just reading the above scripture ad knowing that He will come and make His home with me makes my overwhelm melt away. Does that mean that He is with me when I am sad, stressed, running behind? Does it mean that He is with me when I am fearful, confused, trying to find my way? Does it mean that He is with me in the mundane, the dramatic, the light of the day, and dark of the night?

It does. If we love and obey the Lord, we will experience fellowship with Him. We can walk with Him and talk with Him through every situation and circumstance. We can rest in the fact that we are never alone, our Lord, our God, is with us wherever we go!

What if you exchanged your overwhelm for His overflow?

Here is the reality you can rest in today…

from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:15-21)

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

You CAN overcome the overwhelm by surrendering it to God and receiving what He has for you instead. Today is a great day to get on your knees and confess your overwhelm to Him. Open your hands and tell Him you want what He has for you – His peace, His power, and to be free in Him.

Have the merriest of Christmases!!
