Are you Dormant or Blooming

Are you Dormant or Blooming?

It’s Spring! Yay!!! And today it actually looks and feels like it. Oh, how I love the spring weather, the appearance of growth on the plants, long walks, and being outside without freezing or sweating buckets. I am just hoping it will last more that a few days. This is the season where you just might find me running the heater and the air conditioner in the same day.

This morning, I googled “is my butterfly plant dead”. On the website, gardeningknowhow.com, I read 3 things I could do to see if it was dead, dormant, or still alive…

  • Try the scratch test. Gently scrape a fingernail or sharp knife against a stem – if this reveals green underneath, then that stem is still alive.

  • Try gently twisting a stem around your finger – if it snaps off, it’s probably dead, but if it bends, it’s probably alive.

  • If it’s late in the spring, prune dead growth away. New growth can long come from living stems, and this should encourage it to start growing.

As we look at our plants to determine if they are still alive and if we can expect them to bloom this year, why not ask ourselves the same about our spiritual life. Ask yourself these questions…

  • Has my passion for my Savior dried up? Am I skipping quiet time, church, and bible study more and more?

  • Am I practicing religion, just going through the motions, or growing my relationship with Jesus?

  • Am I conforming to the world, doing what I think is best or am I being transformed by the truth of God’s word and rising up in obedience to Him?

If your spiritual life is dead as a doornail (who remembers that old saying?), or if it has been dormant for a while, or if you are guilty of simply going through the motions – pruning yields new growth! Here are some tips…

  • The best place to begin is on your knees, humbling yourself before the Great I AM, simply asking for forgiveness. His mercy and grace will meet you there.

  • Next, make a list of what you need to stop doing and what you need to start doing. You want to stop doing all the things that are leading you away from God and start doing all the things that will lead you to Him.

  • Then commit. Commit to fix your focus on Him, to get to know Him more, and to live your life for Him.

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.  That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3

Let this be the season where you bloom for His glory. Let His love, joy, and peace blossom in your life. Let your blooms be a sweet aroma to your Heavenly Father.

Happy Spring!
