How to Stop Overthinking Decisions: 5 Biblical Truths for Clarity
Welcome to Overthinkers Anonymous. I'm just kidding! But friend, if you've ever replayed a decision over and over until you felt completely stuck, you're in the right place.
In my last episode, we talked about five things that can hold you back from God's plan. As I talked with my clients, one thing kept coming up: fear. But the more we talked, the more we realized something else was going on. They were overthinking.
Honestly, I would have told you I'm not an overthinker. But after really digging into this topic, I recognized that all of us are prone to it. So let's talk about how to stop overthinking every decision, and how to find real, God-given clarity.
What is overthinking?
One of my favorite places to look for biblically sound answers is GotQuestions.org. It describes overthinking as putting too much time into thinking about or analyzing something in a way that's more harmful than helpful.
Ugh. I don't want my thinking to be more harmful than helpful, do you? Whether I'm making a decision, stepping forward in my calling, or showing up for my family, I want to think it through in a way that helps.
We're overthinking when thoughts about problems, relationships, and plans start to dominate our waking hours. Anybody?
Here's the thing: everyone overthinks sometimes. The key is learning to recognize it, and then to "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV), so our thoughts line up with the truth of God's Word.
Myth: If I think about it long enough, I'll finally be sure I'm making the right decision.
Truth: God gives wisdom generously when we ask, and clarity grows as we obey.
As we walk in obedience and take steps forward, God keeps revealing more. Woo-hoo! That is great news. Here are five truths to help you stop overthinking and start moving forward.
1. Overthinking is often fear in disguise
We tell ourselves we're thinking it through because we want to be wise. But if we're honest, overthinking is often a stall tactic. "I'm not sure, so I'll just wait a minute. I'm a little nervous, so I'll hold off."
When you name what you're afraid of, it loses its power over you. So ask yourself: What am I really afraid of here? Why am I overthinking this?
2. Bring it to God first, not last
Here's what many of us do. Our thoughts start spiraling: How will this play out? What will people think of me? What if I mess it up? Then, after all that worrying, we finally bring our anxiety to God: "Lord, what if, what if, what if?"
We have it backwards. When we bring it to Him first, we may skip the overthinking altogether.
"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6–7, NLT)
Don't worry about anything. It doesn't say only worry about some things. So if you've been saying, "I'm just a worrier, that's how I am," friend, stop claiming that for yourself.
And I love that little word then. So often we want the reward without our part. But God's promise is clear: when we stop worrying, pray about everything, and thank Him for what He has already done, then His peace guards our hearts and minds. That's the very place our overthinking comes from.
3. Filter your thoughts through truth
"And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."(Philippians 4:8, NLT)
That's what we're supposed to think about, not worst-case scenarios.
Here's a simple swap that changes everything: replace your "what if" thoughts with "even if" thoughts. Even if the worst happens, God is good. He will be with me. He will never leave me or forsake me. He still has a plan, even when hard things happen.
Try it, and watch your overthinking decrease.
4. Ask for wisdom, and expect it
"If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking."(James 1:5, NLT)
God is not hiding His plan for your life. He's not hiding your next step or the answers you're seeking. We simply have to come to Him, ask, and listen.
Spend time in His Word and in prayer. Sometimes an answer drops into your spirit, or you stumble across a verse and think, "I just asked Him that, and He just answered me!" Come with an open heart and open hands, and expect to hear from Him. This will change everything about your life and your leadership.
5. Set a decision deadline, then take one faithful step
God's Word is "a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path" (Psalm 119:105, NLT). It lights up your next step, not the whole journey.
You don't have to have all the answers, and you don't have to know how it will all play out. You just have to be faithful to take one step. When you do, clarity comes, and your obedience unlocks the next step.
Remember this: clarity doesn't come before you take a step. It comes as you move.
Use the L.E.A.D. Framework when you're stuck
If you're an overthinker, this simple framework will help you move from spinning to stepping.
Lean into Truth. When you think, "I can't do this," God says, "I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13, NLT). When you think, "I'm not qualified," God says you are His masterpiece, created to do the good things He planned for you long ago (Ephesians 2:10). Lean into God's truth, not the enemy's lies.
Elevate Your Perspective. Look at it from a higher vantage point. How will this look a year from now? This is about more than me. It's about the people watching me, and the purpose God has for my life. My step of faith might be the very thing that encourages someone else.
Accept Responsibility. You are a daughter of the King, and you have a responsibility to obey. When God makes it clear, "This is the way; walk in it," girl, step forward!
Do What's Right. Do the right thing for the right reason. Staying stuck because we're afraid or feel ill-equipped is doing the wrong thing for the wrong reason. The right thing is to fix our eyes on Jesus and take the step, because He is good, He is faithful, and He is leading the way.

"But what if I take the wrong step?"
It's going to be okay. How do I know? Because I've done it, more than once. Pray, "God, I want to be in the center of Your will. Guide me and direct me. And if I take the wrong step, please close that door." As long as you're doing your best to obey, you can keep walking forward with Him.
And being in the center of His will is such a sweet spot. He does things in you and through you, and that is just amazing.
Your next step
You don't have to have every answer to move forward. You only need to trust the One who does.
This week, choose one decision you've been circling around. Pray about it. Set a deadline. And on that day, take your best next step. I'm cheering for you!
