How to Discern God's Will and Step Boldly Into Your Calling
Have you ever felt a stirring in your heart that God is calling you to something more, but you aren't quite sure what that "more" looks like?
Perhaps you know God has a purpose for your life. You sense there is a calling on your leadership. Yet instead of clarity, you feel uncertainty. Instead of confidence, you feel hesitation.
If that's where you find yourself today, you're not alone.
Many Christian leaders spend years asking questions like:
How do I know God's will?
Am I hearing God's voice correctly?
What if I make the wrong decision?
How can I confidently step into the leadership role God has for me?
The good news is this: God is not trying to hide His plan from you. He delights in guiding His children. He wants to direct your steps, strengthen your faith, and help you become the leader He created you to be.
Let's look at five biblical essentials that will help you discern God's guidance and step boldly into your calling.
1. Surrender to God's Way
One of the biggest obstacles to discovering God's plan is our desire to create our own.
We often pray for guidance while secretly hoping God will confirm the path we've already chosen. But true discernment begins with surrender.
Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
When we trust God completely, we stop demanding our preferred outcome and begin seeking His.
The question isn't simply, "What do I want to do?"
The better question is:
"Lord, what do You want me to do?"
Leadership begins with submission.
2. Know What God's Word Says
If you want to hear God's voice, open your Bible and read what He has spoken to us.
Before we search for special revelation, let’s not neglect the truth found in Scripture. God's Word remains the primary way He teaches, corrects, encourages, and guides His people.
When you consistently spend time in the Bible:
You learn God's character.
You recognize His wisdom.
You develop discernment.
You gain confidence in making decisions.
God's guidance will never contradict His Word.
That's why daily time in Scripture is not optional for a Christian leader—it's foundational.
Even fifteen intentional minutes each morning can transform your perspective and strengthen your ability to discern God's direction.
Make it a non-negotiable in your life.
3. Stay Connected to the Holy Spirit
As believers, we are not left to navigate life alone.
The Holy Spirit lives within us, guiding, convicting, encouraging, and confirming God's truth.
Have you ever felt prompted to call someone?
To encourage a friend?
To take a step of faith?
To pause before making a decision?
Often, those promptings are the Holy Spirit at work.
The more time you spend with God, the easier it becomes to recognize His leading.
Discerning God's will is not simply about finding the right answer. It's about developing a relationship with the One who provides the answer.
The goal is not information.
The goal is intimacy. (And… there is nothing like it. I highly suggest it. If you don’t feel like you have an intimate relationship with Jesus - talk to Him about it. Let Him know your desires. Ask Him to show you what you are missing.)
4. Ask God for Divine Guidance
James 1:5 gives us an incredible promise:
“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”
Many leaders carry burdens, confusion, and uncertainty because they forget to ask.
God invites us to seek Him.
Pray specifically.
Ask for wisdom.
Ask for discernment.
Ask Him to reveal truth.
Ask Him to close doors that don't align with His purposes.
Then trust that He is actively working behind the scenes.
One of the most powerful prayers you can pray is:
"Lord, guide my steps and make Your will clear. Open every door You want me to walk through and close every door You don't."
God honors a heart that sincerely seeks His direction.
5. Obey What God Reveals
This is where we sometimes get stuck.
We want clarity before commitment.
We want certainty before obedience.
But faith often works in the opposite direction.
God may ask you to:
Start the ministry.
Have the difficult conversation.
Launch the business.
Lead the Bible study.
Share your testimony.
Take the next step before you can see the entire path.
The reality is that God's calling often stretches us beyond our comfort zones.
Why?
Because He wants us to rely on Him rather than ourselves.
Partial obedience delays spiritual growth.
Complete obedience accelerates it.
When God speaks, trust Him enough to act.
The Truth About Your Calling
Your leadership journey may not look exactly the way you imagined.
God's plan is often bigger, richer, and more impactful than our own.
The key is not knowing every step in advance.
The key is staying close enough to God that you can follow the next step He places before you.
If you're longing for clarity in God's plan, remember these five essentials:
Surrender to God's way.
Spend time in God's Word.
Stay connected to the Holy Spirit.
Ask for divine guidance.
Obey what God reveals.
As you do, you'll discover something powerful:
God is not merely showing you what to do.
He is transforming you into the leader He created you to be.
And as He works in you, He will begin to work through you in ways you never imagined.
