How to Know God's Plan: 3 Questions to Ask Before Your Next Step

What if you don't need God's entire plan? What if you only need enough faith to take your next step?

Have you ever prayed something like this? "Lord, if You'll just show me exactly where this is all headed, I'll gladly obey."

I've prayed that prayer more times than I can count. I wanted the roadmap, the timeline and the guarantee that everything would work out.

But that's rarely how God leads us.

Instead of giving us a blueprint, He usually gives us one assignment.

  • One conversation.

  • One opportunity.

  • One act of obedience.

  • One next step.

If you've been wondering how to know God's plan for your life or asking God to reveal your purpose, I want to encourage you today with a truth that has changed my life:

You don't need God's whole plan. You just need your next faithful step.

Why God Doesn't Reveal the Entire Plan

As much as we'd love to know what the next five or ten years will look like, Scripture teaches us that faith has never worked that way.

"Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see." (Hebrews 11:1, NLT)

Faith requires trust—not certainty.

Think about some of the people God used throughout the Bible.

  • Abraham wasn't given a detailed itinerary. God simply said, "Go."

  • Moses didn't know how millions of Israelites would be delivered.

  • David couldn't see the path from shepherd boy to king.

  • Esther had no idea one courageous conversation would save an entire nation.

None of them knew the entire story. But every one of them had enough light for the next step.

Maybe that's exactly where you are today.

You're wondering...

  • Should I start the business?

  • Should I volunteer?

  • Should I write the book?

  • Should I launch the ministry?

  • Should I apply for the job?

  • Should I have that difficult conversation?

Sometimes we're asking God for Step 10 while He's simply waiting for us to take Step 1. (Ouch!)

God's Word Is a Lamp—Not Stadium Lights

One of my favorite verses is Psalm 119:105:

"Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." (NLT)

Have you ever noticed it says lamp? Not floodlights or stadium lights. Just enough light for your next step.

Honestly?

Sometimes I wish God would hand me the entire blueprint.

I'd like to know where the money is coming from.

Whether people will support the idea.

If I'll succeed.

If I'm making the right decision.

But God keeps reminding me that He wants something greater than certainty.

He wants trust.

Clarity Often Comes While You're Moving

One lesson I've learned over the years is Clarity usually comes while we're moving—not while we're standing still.

It's like driving down a dark road at night. Your headlights don't illuminate the entire highway. They only reveal enough road to keep moving. As you continue driving, more of the road becomes visible.

God often leads us the same way.

James 1:5 tells us:

"If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you." (NLT)

Notice what we're promised.

Wisdom. Not necessarily every detail. Wisdom helps us recognize the next faithful decision, then we trust God with the outcome.

Are You Waiting on God...or Waiting Until You Feel Ready?

This question has challenged me more than once.

Sometimes we say we're "waiting on God."

But if we're honest...we're waiting until we're confident. We're waiting until there's no risk. We're waiting until we know we'll succeed.

If that's what we're waiting for, we may be waiting a very long time.

Maybe God isn't waiting on us to become fearless. Maybe He's waiting on us to trust Him. Courage isn't the absence of uncertainty. Courage is choosing obedience anyway.

Small Acts of Obedience Can Change Everything

It's easy to overlook the small things.

  • One phone call.

  • One email.

  • One conversation.

  • One prayer.

  • One application.

  • One invitation.

  • One encouraging text.

But throughout Scripture, God has always done extraordinary things through ordinary acts of obedience.

  • David picked up five stones.

  • A little boy shared his lunch.

  • A widow gave two small coins.

None of them knew how God would use what they offered.

Neither do you.

Never underestimate what God can do with one faithful step.

What's Your Next Step?

Instead of asking,

"Lord, what's Your five-year plan?"

Try asking,

  • Lord, what's my assignment today?

  • Who needs encouragement today?

  • What conversation have I been avoiding?

  • What opportunity have I been dismissing because it seems too small?

Your next step may not look impressive to anyone else.

But heaven notices.

Every act of obedience strengthens your faith for the next one.

3 Questions to Ask Before You Take Your Next Step

If you're trying to discern God's direction, here are three questions I encourage myself—and my coaching clients—to ask.

1. Does it align with God's Word?

God will never lead you to do something that contradicts Scripture. If your next step requires compromising your integrity, ignoring biblical truth, or treating someone without love, it isn't God's direction. His Word is always our first guide.

2. Am I being held back by wisdom...or by fear?

There is a difference. Wisdom asks thoughtful questions. Fear keeps making excuses.

Sometimes we say we're "waiting on God" when we're actually waiting until we feel completely confident. But faith has never required complete confidence before obedience. Ask yourself honestly, If I knew I couldn't fail, would I take this step? If the answer is yes, fear may be the real obstacle.

3. What's one small act of obedience I can take today?

Notice I didn't say next month or next year. Today. (a phone call, email, conversation, step forward) You don't have to finish the journey today. You simply need to take the next faithful step.

One Challenge Before You Go

Before you close this page, write down one thing.

Just one.

What's the next thing you already know God has been asking you to do?

Not ten things. Not your life plan. Just the next step.

Then commit to taking action within the next 24 hours.

You don't need perfection. You don't need certainty. You don't need the whole plan.

You simply need the courage to trust God with today's assignment.

And I have a feeling that one step may become the beginning of something far greater than you can imagine.
